Bee Urban is a social enterprise that aims to work with communities to improve the environment for the benefit of us all. We focus on responsible urban beekeeping, horticulture and community growing.

It’s not just about bees, people are vital to Bee Urban. Community engagement and volunteering is important to us, providing opportunities to contribute to the locality, be creative and reduce social isolation.

We are here to work with everyone, whatever your age, level of experience or need. We are skilled in working with vulnerable adults, including those with mental health needs and learning difficulties. Everyone is welcome.

Our main site is the The Hive just behind the cafe and in front of St Agnes church in Kennington Park and we do a significant amount of work from Camberwell Subterranea. Both are sites that were derelict and abused before Bee Urban turned them into thriving community spaces, working with local volunteers to clear waste and old structures and replace them with environmentally friendly, horticulturally rich buildings and growing spaces – the process being as important as the finished product.

Apiaries – various sites where we manage bees and work to enhance the environment with community gardening and bio diverse planting – these are on housing estates, on community allotments and on rooftops in and around central London.

There are constructive volunteering opportunities at Bee Urban. If you would like to volunteer and pass on your skills, or develop new skills, then please get in touch.

We also now supply Thorne’s bee keeping equipment. We offer discount to association members.

Honey harvesting at BeeUrban

Lead director Barnaby Shaw talking us through the process of harvesting honey. From clearing the bees from the hive boxes, decapping hive frames to extracting and setting the honey!

Here at BeeUrban we maintain our own hives in Kennington park as well as several other locations in South London. We harvest, jar and sell all our honey to local businesses and customers.

Volunteer Day with NCS

Young volunteers from the National Citizen Service ‘The Challenge’ , volunteer were helping to support the Camberwell subterranea project that Bee Urban runs on the Brandon Estate in Camberwell.

At BeeUrban we work alongside many different organisations from schools to businesses (and also run a volunteer day every thursday and friday 12-4pm). Tasks range from maintenance, horticulture to candle making and jarring honey!
